How to Avoid Online Scams (Step-by-Step)

Updated: Aug 13

Staying safe online is easier than you think. Follow these simple steps to protect yourself and your personal information.

ree

Step 1: Slow Down and Think Before You Click

  • If you get an unexpected email, text, or message — don’t rush.

  • Scammers often try to scare you (saying "urgent!" or "act now!").

  • Take a deep breath and think before clicking any links or replying.

Step 2: Check Who’s Really Sending the Message

  • Look carefully at the email address or phone number.

  • Real companies will use official addresses (like @bankname.com), not strange ones (like @gmail.com or random numbers).

  • If you're unsure, call the company directly using a number you trust — not the number in the message.

Step 3: Never Share Personal Information

  • Real businesses will never ask for your:

    • Social Security number

    • Bank account numbers

    • Passwords

    • Credit card information

  • If someone asks for this online or by text/email, or they called you, it’s a scam.

Step 4: Look for Red Flags

  • Bad spelling, strange wording, or odd grammar = possible scam.

  • Asking for gift cards, wire transfers, or payments you weren’t expecting = scam.

  • Too-good-to-be-true offers (like winning a prize you didn’t enter) = scam.

Step 5: Use Strong Passwords and Keep Them Private

  • Create passwords that are at least 8 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.

  • Never share your passwords with anyone.

  • Write them down safely or use a trusted password manager app.

Step 6: Keep Your Devices Updated

  • Update your phone, tablet, or computer when you get a notice.

  • Updates fix security problems and help block scams.

Step 7: Trust Your Gut

  • If something feels wrong or too confusing — trust yourself.

  • It's always okay to stop, close the website or app, and ask someone you trust for help.

Quick Reminder:

  • Take your time

  • Check who’s asking

  • Never give out personal info

  • Trust your instincts

  • Real businesses will never contact you for your personal information
