Extra Help Program (Low-Income Subsidy for Prescriptions)

Updated: Apr 26

The Extra Help program, also called the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), is designed to help Medicare beneficiaries reduce the cost of their prescription drugs. It's offered through the Social Security Administration and is one of the easiest ways to save money if you’re on Medicare Part D.

✅ Who Qualifies:

  • Have Medicare Part A and/or Part B AND Medicare Part D

  • Limited income (around $22,000/year for individuals or $30,000/year for couples)

  • Limited assets (below $17,220 for individuals or $34,360 for couples in 2025)

If you're on Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or a Medicare Savings Program — you automatically qualify.

💊 What Extra Help Covers:

  • Up to 100% of your monthly Medicare Part D premium (for benchmark plans)

  • No or low deductibles for prescriptions

  • Significantly reduced copays (as low as $1.55–$10.35 in 2025)

  • Protection from the Part D coverage gap (donut hole)

📝 How to Apply:

  1. Apply online: ssa.gov/extrahelp

  2. By phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213

  3. In person: Visit your local Social Security office

Applications are usually processed quickly, and you will receive a determination by mail. If you're approved, your drug plan will be adjusted accordingly.
